Payment Method Discount

Offer customers a discount for paying with an eligible payment method and understand how the discount is applied, invoiced and reported.

Payment Method Discounts

Payment Method Discounts allow you to offer customers a discount when they pay using an eligible payment method.

For example, you can offer customers a discount when they pay by Direct Debit. The discount is applied when the payment is processed and recorded separately from the original invoice amount.

Payment Method Discounts are currently available by request. Please contact Loopit Support to have this feature enabled for your workspace.

How Payment Method Discounts work

An invoice is always issued for the full amount that has been billed to the customer.

When the customer pays the invoice using a payment method that is eligible for a discount, Loopit applies the discount as a Payment Method Adjustment.

This means the original invoice value remains unchanged, while the amount collected from the customer reflects the applicable discount.

For example, if an invoice is issued for $500 and the customer receives a 2% discount for paying by Direct Debit:

Description
Amount

Invoice total

$500.00

Direct Debit discount

-$10.00

Amount paid

$490.00

The $10 discount is recorded as a Payment Method Adjustment. Loopit creates an adjustment credit note for the discount amount and applies it to the same invoice. The credit note reason uses the configured discount label, for example Direct Debit Discount. This allows the invoice to be fully settled while keeping the original invoice charges unchanged.

What customers see on their invoice

You can use the invoice footnote to let customers know that a discount is available when they pay using an eligible payment method.

This message appears on the invoice alongside the normal invoice details and can be used to explain which payment method the customer should use to receive the discount.

Once the invoice has been paid using the eligible payment method, the payment adjustment is reflected on the invoice and the remaining balance is updated accordingly.

The discount does not alter the original charge line items on the invoice.

Paying an invoice with a discounted payment method

When manually processing an invoice payment, Loopit checks whether the selected payment method is eligible for a discount.

If the selected payment method is eligible for a discount, the adjustment is shown before the payment is processed.

To process the payment:

  1. Open the invoice you want to pay.

  2. Select Pay Invoice.

  3. Select the customer's payment method.

  4. If the selected payment method has a discount available, review the Payment Method Discount shown in the payment summary.

  5. Confirm the final amount to be paid.

  6. Select Process Payment.

The discount is applied as part of the payment and the invoice balance is updated once the payment has been successfully processed.

If the customer pays using a payment method that is not eligible for a discount, the invoice is paid at its normal outstanding amount.

Letting customers know about the discount

You can customise the invoice footnote for each location to let customers know how much they could save by using an eligible payment method or how much discount has already been applied.

Navigate to Settings → Locations, select the relevant location, and update the Invoice footnote.

If you operate from multiple locations, the invoice footnote can be configured separately for each location. The footnote also supports formatting and merge fields, allowing the message to change based on the invoice balance and the discounts available or already applied.

Insert a merge field

Select Insert merge field from the invoice footnote toolbar and choose the field you want to insert.

Only merge fields relevant to the payment methods configured for your workspace are shown.

Available merge fields

There are two types of merge fields:

  • Amount fields display a formatted monetary value, such as $15.00. If there is no amount, they display $0.00.

  • Condition fields determine whether content is displayed. These fields begin with has_ and correspond to an amount field.

Invoice balance

{{au_becs_debit_discount_on_balance_due}}

{{#has_au_becs_debit_discount_on_balance_due}}

{{au_becs_debit_discount_applied}}

{{#has_au_becs_debit_discount_applied}}

The discount already applied to Direct Debit payments on the invoice

Card

{{card_discount_on_balance_due}}

{{#has_card_discount_on_balance_due}}

The discount available if the outstanding balance is paid by card

{{card_discount_applied}}

{{#has_card_discount_applied}}

The discount already applied to card payments on the invoice

Other configured payment methods follow the same pattern, with merge fields for:

  • the discount available on the outstanding balance

  • the discount already applied

Use Insert merge field to see the fields currently available for your workspace.

Show the available discount

For example, you can let customers know how much they could save by paying the outstanding balance by Direct Debit:

If the invoice has a balance due of $1,000 and the available Direct Debit discount is $15.00, the customer will see:

The condition ensures the message is only shown when there is a Direct Debit discount available.

Without the condition, the amount field would still display $0.00 when there is no discount to show.

Show different messages for outstanding and settled invoices

You can combine the invoice balance and Payment Method Discount conditions to show different messages depending on the state of the invoice.

For example:

This results in the following behaviour:

  • Invoice has a balance due — shows the discount available if the outstanding balance is paid by Direct Debit.

  • Invoice is settled and a Direct Debit discount was applied — shows the discount already applied to Direct Debit payments.

  • Invoice is settled and no Direct Debit discount was applied — no discount message is shown.

{{^has_balance_due}} is an inverted condition. It displays its content only when has_balance_due is false.

If all conditions in the invoice footnote evaluate to false, the footnote is omitted from the invoice rather than displaying an empty section.

Mustache syntax

Invoice footnotes use Mustache syntax.

A merge field displays a value:

A section displays content when a condition is true:

An inverted section displays content when a condition is false:

For example:

And an inverted condition can be used for a settled invoice:

For more information about Mustache syntax, see the Mustache documentation.

The invoice footnote is used to communicate the discount to your customer. Changing the footnote does not change the Payment Method Discount configured for your workspace.

Viewing Payment Method Discounts in reports

Payment Method Discounts are recorded separately so that you can reconcile the original amount invoiced with the amount actually collected from the customer.

Invoice and payment reports

Finance reports include a Payment Method Adjustment value where an adjustment has been applied to a payment.

Payment Method Adjustments can include both surcharges and discounts.

A surcharge increases the amount collected from the customer, while a discount reduces the amount collected.

This allows you to identify the adjustment separately from the invoice value and payment amount when reviewing or exporting financial data.

Payment Method Discounts in exports

Payment Method Discount details are available in the Invoices, Payments, and Financial Summary exports.

Each export provides a different level of detail depending on whether you are reviewing an invoice, an individual payment, or your overall financial reporting.

Invoices export

The Invoices export shows the total Payment Method Discount applied to each invoice.

The following fields are included:

  • Payment Method Discount Total — the total Payment Method Discount applied to the invoice.

  • Payment Method Discount Breakdown — a breakdown of the discount by its configured label, for example Direct Debit Discount: 1.50.

Discount Total and Surcharge Total are also included as separate fields.

This allows Payment Method Discounts to be identified separately from other discounts and surcharges applied to the invoice.

Payments export

The Payments export shows the Payment Method Discount applied to each individual payment.

The following fields are included:

  • Payment Method Discount Rate — the discount rate applied to the payment.

  • Payment Method Discount Amount — the discount amount applied to the payment.

  • Payment Method Discount Label — the configured label for the discount, for example Direct Debit Discount.

The Discount Total is provided separately from the Payment Method Discount fields.

This is useful when reconciling the discount applied at the time each payment was processed.

Financial Summary export

The Financial Summary export includes Payment Method Discounts within the Credit Note Adjustments breakdown.

Payment Method Discounts are shown under Credit Note Adjustments (Payment Method Adjustment), while other invoice adjustments are shown separately under Credit Note Adjustments (Invoice Adjustment).

The report includes:

  • Invoices Issued

  • Credit Note Adjustments (Invoice Adjustment)

  • Credit Note Adjustments (Payment Method Adjustment)

  • Total Revenue

This matches the breakdown shown in the Financial Summary in Loopit and makes it easier to reconcile Payment Method Discount credit notes alongside other invoice adjustments.

Financial Summary and Monthly Summary

Payment Method Discounts are reflected in the Financial Summary and Monthly Summary as part of Credit Note Adjustments.

Credit note adjustments are broken down by adjustment type. Discounts created as a result of the payment method used are shown under Credit Note Adjustments (Payment Method Adjustment), separately from Invoice Adjustments.

The Credit Note Adjustments total includes both types of adjustment credit notes and is deducted from Invoices Issued to calculate Total Revenue.

When reviewing your financial reports:

  • Invoices Issued represent the original amount invoiced to customers.

  • Credit Note Adjustments (Invoice Adjustment) represent credit notes created from invoice adjustments.

  • Credit Note Adjustments (Payment Method Adjustment) represent credit notes created for Payment Method Discounts.

  • Total Revenue is calculated after deducting Credit Note Adjustments from Invoices Issued.

Surcharges are reported separately and are not included in the Credit Note Adjustments total.

For more information about financial reporting, see Financial Summary.

Important considerations

Payment Method Discounts are applied based on the payment method used to process the payment.

When an eligible payment method is used, Loopit creates an adjustment credit note for the discount amount and applies it to the same invoice.

The credit note reason is taken from the configured Payment Method Discount label. For example, if the discount label is configured as Direct Debit Discount, the adjustment credit note will use Direct Debit Discount as the reason.

If the customer uses a payment method that is not eligible for a discount, no adjustment credit note is created and the invoice is paid at its normal outstanding amount.

Enabling Payment Method Discounts

Payment Method Discounts must currently be enabled for your workspace before they can be used.

Please contact Loopit Support if you would like to enable Payment Method Discounts or discuss the payment methods and discount options available for your workspace.
